Colombian Reggaetón
The Medellín reggaetón wave that made Colombia the world's largest reggaetón export hub in the 2010s: J Balvin, Karol G, Feid, Maluma.
What it sounds like
Colombian reggaetón takes Puerto Rico's early-2000s reggaetón dembow 2/4 template and adds a Colombian melodic sensibility drawn from vallenato, salsa, and cumbia. The centre is Medellín, and the two dominant labels are Universal Music Latin Colombia (from 1997) and Feid's own WK Records (from 2015). Together they set the global Latin-pop template that dominated the streaming era from 2015 forward. Tempos sit at 90–95 BPM standard, occasionally slowing to 70–80 BPM 'trap reggaetón.'
How it came about
J Balvin (born 1985 as José Osorio) worked mixtapes locally from 2004, broke commercially with 'Ay Vamos' (2013) and '6 AM' (with Farruko, 2014), and set a global benchmark with 'Mi Gente' (2017, co-written with Willy William, remixed with Beyoncé) — 4.4 billion streams. Karol G (born 1991) arrived with 'Ahora Me Llama' (2017) and consolidated her position as Latin music's biggest female artist with 'Tusa' (2019, feat. Nicki Minaj). Feid and Maluma dominate the 2020s; Feid's 'Yandel 150' (2023) was a Spanish-language global hit at the same tier.
What to listen for
Listen to the intro of 'Mi Gente': four bars of Willy William's house-inflected synth loop, then the dembow 2/4 kicks in. The Colombian signature is heavy low end plus deliberately light midrange guitar — noticeably lighter in the middle than the Puerto Rican originals. 'Tusa' does the same trick with a piano loop before the beat. Lyrics stay in Spanish and mostly circle love, party, feminism, and class.
If you only hear one thing
J Balvin's 'Mi Gente' (2017) is the international peak. Karol G's 'Tusa' (2019, with Nicki Minaj) is the definitive female-vocal companion. Feid's 'Yandel 150' (2023) captures the club-oriented 2020s direction; Maluma's 'Felices los 4' (2017) and 'Hawái' (2020) show the pop-forward end.
Trivia
The Beyoncé remix of 'Mi Gente' (2017) was a benefit release, with all proceeds going to Hurricane Maria relief for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Karol G's real name is Carolina Giraldo Navia; the stage name is a pre-Spotify iTunes-era search-friendly shortening. Feid runs WK Records himself; the green-and-black visual identity is central to his brand. Ferxxo is his own alter-ego — the two names belong to the same artist, used on distinct release cycles like the Ferxxo Vol. series. Maluma has moved into acting, appearing in the 2022 Jennifer Lopez film Marry Me.
