Digicore

United States · 2020–present

Also known as: Glitchcore

Online hyperpop-emo hybrid where Discord-era teenagers chase emotion at 160-plus BPM.

What it sounds like

Digicore runs hot — typically 160 to 200 BPM — with the brittle digital textures of hyperpop wrapped around emo-trap's emotional pitch. Drums are sparse and trap-derived but pushed faster than the original template; synths sit somewhere between melody and noise, often with hard clipping treated as a feature. Vocals swing wildly between AutoTuned mumbles and full-throated screams, sometimes inside a single bar. Lyrics tend toward adolescent interior states: self-doubt, online loneliness, dissociation. Songs are short, frequently under two minutes, built for replay on Discord servers and TikTok rather than radio.

How it came about

The scene crystallized around 2020 on SoundCloud and YouTube, with artists like glaive, ericdoa, midwxst, and the collective Helix Tears emerging out of the same online network as the hyperpop circle around 100 gecs. The label Hyperboy gathered some of the early talent; producer notnoah and others built the sonic vocabulary. The audience was almost entirely teenage and almost entirely Discord-native, which shaped both the speed of feedback and the rapid stylistic mutation. The name itself appears to be a contraction of digital and hardcore or digital emotional, but no single source claims authorship.

What to listen for

On glaive's all dogs go to heaven, notice how the melodic hook coexists with grating synth distortion — the noise is the production, not an accident. ericdoa's sad and killing me! show the dynamic extremes, with whisper-soft verses against sudden screamed climaxes. The genre's signature is emotional whiplash inside very short forms; songs rarely build, they switch.

If you only hear one thing

Start with midwxst's all my friends for the poppier melodic end, then ericdoa's sad for the more emotionally raw side.

Trivia

Digicore is closer to a network than a genre — most of the originating artists know each other from the same Discord servers, collaborate constantly, and routinely appear on each other's tracks. The community structure matters as much as the sonic conventions.
