Hexd
Late-2010s internet edit style: pop and net-music tracks pitched down and drowned in reverb until outlines dissolve — a TikTok-era extension of slowed-and-reverb.
What it sounds like
Hexd is more an editing aesthetic than a writing one: producers take an existing track (often hyperpop, vocaloid, or net-pop) and pitch it down, slow it down, push reverb tails out, and let the low end balloon until the original mix is barely intact. Drums get softer and slower; vocals stretch out so vowels carry most of the meaning; synth pads bleed past the bar. Most pieces live as YouTube and SoundCloud uploads with looping animated stills rather than as commercial releases.
How it came about
Hexd grew out of the slowed-and-reverb edit culture that spread on TikTok, YouTube, and SoundCloud around 2019-2021, when the algorithm rewarded long-form ambient versions of pop hits. It overlaps with vaporwave's slowed-down sample tradition but uses contemporary net music as source material rather than 1980s muzak. The label itself is community-coined and the discography is mostly anonymous or under fluctuating producer handles.
What to listen for
Compare the source track with the hexd edit when you can — what disappears is as important as what stays. Vowels become the lead. The bass often saturates the room rather than playing notes you can pitch-identify.
If you only hear one thing
Edits of yameii online's 'Tekka' (2020) or 'MEGA EVOLVE' (2019) are common entry points; for the underlying ambient-pop ear, Sweet Trip's 'Velocity:Design:Comfort' (2003) is a useful reference.
Trivia
Hexd has no canonical artist roster because the genre is built around fan edits — most uploads credit the original artist plus the channel that produced the edit, which makes traditional discography listings difficult to compile.
