Cloud Rap

United States · 2009–present

Hazy, sample-floating hip-hop born on early-2010s SoundCloud and Tumblr — atmosphere over attack.

What it sounds like

Cloud rap pushes beats toward ambient texture: blurred synth pads, pitched vocal samples, soft kicks, and minimal snares. Tempos vary but the perceived feel is slow and drifting, with reverb tails that smear the attack of every drum hit. Vocals are delivered low in energy, often nearly monotone, with the rapper mixed at conversational volume rather than fronted as a lead. Lyrics move between sincerity and meme, and song structures are loose, frequently abandoning verse-chorus form entirely. The production aesthetic owes as much to chopped-and-screwed Houston rap and ambient music as to traditional hip-hop.

How it came about

The sound emerged around 2009 to 2011 on SoundCloud, Tumblr, and YouTube, with producer Clams Casino's early beats for Lil B and the New York rapper Main Attrakionz providing a template. A$AP Rocky's debut mixtape Live.Love.A$AP (2011), partly produced by Clams Casino and Beautiful Lou, brought the aesthetic into mainstream visibility. The scene was simultaneous with vaporwave and witch house and shared their internet-native sensibility, with image-board moodboards and tag-driven discovery doing much of the cultural work.

What to listen for

Listen for how the drums sit behind the harmonic content rather than driving the track. On Clams Casino's I'm God, a sampled Imogen Heap vocal hovers above a barely-articulated drum pattern. The rapping is often dryer than the beat — Lil B half-speaks, Rocky drifts — and the contrast between the dry voice and the wet instrumental is part of the sound's signature.

If you only hear one thing

Clams Casino's I'm God (2011) establishes the production template. A$AP Rocky's Peso (2011) or Purple Swag (2011) shows how the sound carried mainstream rap.

Trivia

The cloud in cloud rap referred both to the sonic haze and to cloud storage and online distribution — the music was conceived for and circulated through file-sharing, SoundCloud, and Tumblr reblogs before any record industry attention.
