Plugg
Atlanta-born trap offshoot with shimmering, soft synths and dreamy arpeggiated melodies over standard 808s.
What it sounds like
Plugg keeps trap's 16th-note hi-hats and slow 808 kick patterns but swaps out the cold, horror-movie synths for soft, glassy ones — bell-like leads, major-7 and minor-9 arpeggiated chords, transparent pads. Reverb is dialed up so that note edges blur into one another, and the overall tonal center sits in the upper midrange rather than the bass-heavy floor of standard trap. Rappers ride loosely on top, treating the voice as another textural element rather than a focal point. Playboi Carti's 'Magnolia' (2017) is the moment plugg crossed into mainstream rap.
How it came about
Producers Mexikodro and Cassius Jay began uploading early plugg beats to SoundCloud around 2014 and 2015, deliberately splicing trap percussion with the bright synth palette of contemporary future bass (Flume, Porter Robinson). The term 'plugg' is slang for a drug supplier, and producers tagged their work 'plugg type beat' to make it searchable on SoundCloud. The sound stayed regional and online-native until Playboi Carti and TM88 used it on 'Magnolia,' which became Carti's commercial breakthrough. From there, sub-variants — pluggnb, dark plugg — proliferated.
What to listen for
Identify the synth lead first: it's almost always an arpeggiated pattern in a soft, glassy timbre, sitting noticeably higher in the frequency range than a typical trap synth. The chord voicings include 7ths and 9ths rather than just minor triads, which is what gives plugg its dreamy quality. The drums underneath are otherwise straight trap.

Trivia
Mexikodro was a teenager living in Texas when his SoundCloud beats started circulating; he has said he originally meant the bright synths as a joke, expecting other producers to find them too soft to use, and was surprised when the aesthetic became a genre.
