Malaysia

Southeast Asia

Malaysia is one of Southeast Asia's more Western-dominated streaming markets, with TikTok revivals of Justin Bieber's 'Beauty And A Beat' and Bruno Mars' 'Risk It All' reaching #1 in 2026. Beneath that, the country runs three parallel ethnic-language pop scenes: Malay-language pop, Mandopop for the Chinese-Malaysian community, and Tamil-film music for the Indian-Malaysian community. The country's multi-ethnic structure shows up directly in the playlist economy.

Generational / regional / economic split

Younger Malay listeners gravitate toward K-pop and Western pop; older Malay listeners stick with established artists like Siti Nurhaliza and Faizal Tahir and with nasheed religious vocal music. Chinese-Malaysian listeners of similar ages skew much more toward Mandopop from Taiwan and the mainland than their Malay peers do toward equivalent local music. Indian-Malaysian audiences primarily follow Tamil film music from South India. Indonesian artists like Ifan Seventeen sit close enough culturally to read as quasi-domestic.
