Funk MTG (Montagem)
Brazilian funk reworked as a stitched-together montage of 8- to 16-bar samples, optimized for TikTok loops.
What it sounds like
Funk MTG, short for montagem, abandons the conventional verse-chorus song in favor of a chain of short blocks, each lasting roughly 8 to 16 bars. The kick and synth bass hold steady underneath while toplines, vocal snippets, and sampled fragments are swapped in and out almost like a DJ mix. Source material can include earlier baile funk hits, video-game cues, internet memes, and TV jingles, often credited in the track title as section names. Songs run long, sometimes five to eight minutes, but read as a sequence of micro-hooks rather than a single narrative arc.
How it came about
The montagem approach gained traction in the early 2020s as Rio producers like DJ TPC, DJ LC da Roca, and Mu540 began structuring tracks around TikTok and Triller's looped-video logic. The shift mirrored what happened with hyperpop and DJ edits elsewhere: when listening starts at a 15-second loop, the album-track structure stops mattering. Some montagens function essentially as DJ tools, with each section labeled so a club DJ can isolate a passage. The style now overlaps with funk bruxaria, a harder witch-house-adjacent variant, and dominates Brazilian charts in 2024 and 2025.
What to listen for
Each section transition is the genre's main event - notice how producers swap not just the topline but the snare pattern or bass texture between blocks. The fun is partly recognition: spotting the sampled game theme or older funk hook being recontextualized. The continuous kick keeps you anchored while the upper layers refuse to settle.
If you only hear one thing
DJ TPC's 'Montagem - Rapunzel' (2022) is a good first taste of the segmented structure. MC IG's 'Bumbum Granada' (2020) is a calmer, more song-shaped example that bridges traditional funk and the montagem approach.
Trivia
Montagem is Portuguese for 'assembly' or 'film montage,' and producers use the term almost in the cinema-editing sense - tracks are built like supercuts of recognizable musical moments rather than written from scratch.
