New Zealand

New Zealand's RMNZ Top 40 is even more Anglo-dominated than Australia's. Olivia Dean's 'Man I Need' has had a remarkable run as a long-term #1, holding the top spot for 31 weeks at last count. The country's biggest domestic exports remain Lorde, Six60, Benee and Stan Walker. Pasifika-influenced reggae and pop preserve regional color that the chart alone wouldn't show.

Generational / regional / economic split

Younger listeners run on Anglo-American pop and K-pop, much as in Australia. Pasifika music — the Island reggae sound rooted in Samoan, Tongan and Maori communities — is the soundtrack of weddings, churches and community events. Maori-language music receives structured support under the Te Reo cultural policy framework but stays a minority taste commercially. New Zealand is small enough that a single domestic act can hold the chart for stretches that would be impossible in a larger market.
