Mexico

Latin America & the Caribbean

Mexico is in the middle of a Musica Mexicana peak. Corridos tumbados — the hip-hop-inflected modern corrido sound — corridos belicos, Sierreno trap and Regional Mexican Banda dominate the chart. Peso Pluma, Fuerza Regida, Natanael Cano and Junior H have turned what used to be border-state regional music into a global format. The Sheinbaum government's Mexico Canta campaign has pushed back against narco-themed lyrics, putting visible pressure on parts of the scene.

Generational / regional / economic split

Younger Mexicans run on Corridos tumbados and Sierreno trap; older listeners and rural audiences hold to Banda, Mariachi and Ranchera. The northern border states keep Norteno, with its signature accordion, as the regional default. Mexico City, by contrast, mixes Latin urbano and international pop alongside the regional Mexican wave. The scene is unusually politicized right now, with debates over corrido lyrics regularly making national news.
