Swedish-Language Rap

Sweden · 2015–present

Swedish-language drill and trap from immigrant-heavy suburbs of Stockholm and Malmö, now central to Swedish pop.

What it sounds like

Swedish rap centers on UK drill and trap, running at 135 to 150 BPM with sliding 808 basslines, fast triplet hi-hats, and minor-key melodies. Vocals are typically lightly autotuned and melodic — Yasin's smooth flows, Greekazo's rougher delivery, the late Einár's haunted melodic lines — with a younger demographic dominating. Swedish hard consonants combined with Arabic and Somali slang give the lyrics a distinctive consonant attack against the drill drum kit. Mixes are dry, dark, and cold.

How it came about

Sweden's musical identity abroad was long defined by ABBA-style English-language pop, but the 2010s reset that picture. Yasin, Z.E., Dree Low, and Einár grew up in Förorten — the suburban housing projects, especially Stockholm's Rinkeby and Tensta and Malmö's Rosengård — as second- and third-generation children of Middle Eastern, North African, and East African immigrants. They brought local stories of housing inequality and rising gang-related gun violence into Swedish-language drill. Einár's murder in October 2021 at age 19 forced a national conversation about the line between the world the music describes and the rappers' own lives.

What to listen for

Listen for the Arabic and Somali slang sprinkled through Swedish verses — words like 'wallah,' 'aywa,' and Förorten-specific vocabulary mark the linguistic distance from mainstream Swedish. The drill basslines slide in a UK style rather than stepping, which sets Swedish rap apart from German trap. Yasin's vocal phrasing in particular is unusually smooth for the genre's drum aggression.

If you only hear one thing

Single: Yasin, 'Trakten Min' (2019). Album: Yasin, 'NWA' (2020) or Einár, 'Nu eller aldrig' (2019).

Trivia

Several of the most-streamed Swedish-language albums of the past five years have been rap records by artists in their late teens, which has effectively made Förorten Swedish — not the polished English-language pop that the country had long exported — the de facto sound of contemporary Swedish music at home.
