Ethiopia

Sub-Saharan Africa

Ethiopia runs one of the most self-contained music markets in sub-Saharan Africa. Amharic-language pop is the spine of the chart, built on the distinctive pentatonic qenet scale that gives Ethiopian melody its instantly recognizable color — the same sound that fed Ethio-jazz in the 1970s. Teddy Afro, Eyob Mekonnen and Mak Ezra anchor the current generation of national stars. Spotify usage is still low, so YouTube and TikTok are effectively the chart.

Generational / regional / economic split

Because Amharic pop carries across generations, the gap between teenage and middle-aged listening is smaller here than in most African markets. Regional listeners follow Tigrigna, Oromo and Guragigna-language scenes that run in parallel rather than competing for chart space. Afrobeats and K-pop have made fewer inroads in Ethiopia than almost anywhere else on the continent, partly because of platform mix and partly because the qenet sound just dominates local taste. Live music in Addis Ababa azmari bars still serves as a working talent pipeline.
