South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and neighbouring states. The region produced Mbaqanga and the choral Isicathamiya tradition (Ladysmith Black Mambazo), the 1990s house offshoot Kwaito, and most recently Amapiano, now one of the most exported African club sounds.

Most popular

  • Electronic & DanceKuduroAngolan electronic dance music from late-1990s Luanda — distorted kicks at 130-140 BPM, rap-shouted vocals, designed for hyperkinetic dance.
  • Folk & WorldKwaitoPost-apartheid Johannesburg's slowed-down house music, sung over the township beat in local languages rather than English.
  • PopSunguraZimbabwean dance pop derived from East African rumba and benga, with intricate guitar lines and Shona vocals.
  • Folk & WorldMaskandiZulu guitar-and-storytelling music born from migrant mine workers, with one foot in the rural kraal and one in the Johannesburg hostel.
  • Folk & WorldChimurenga MusicZimbabwean political guitar music led by Thomas Mapfumo, with electric-guitar parts that imitate the mbira thumb piano.
  • Folk & WorldSalegyMalagasy dance music from the northwest coast — fast 6/8 grooves, guitar and accordion, with Jaojoby as its undisputed king.
  • Folk & WorldMbaqangaSouth African township electric dance music combining bouncing bass, female chorus, and male groan vocals.
  • Folk & WorldMarrabentaMozambican guitar-and-percussion dance music born in the streets of colonial Lourenco Marques.
